King's College
1999 The Robert J. Ell Alumni Award For Outstanding Service to Alma Mater
John Carney '64
The Robert J. Ell Alumni Award for Outstanding Service to Alma Mater
was established to honor the dedication and commitment of King’s first
alumni director. Bob Ell served forty-two years with integrity, warmth,
professionalism and a wonderful sense of humor.
John Carney received his B.A. in Accounting in 1964. While a student he played basketball, intramural softball, football and volleyball and was a member of the Christopher Club and the Business Administration Club. After graduation John went to work for IBM where he established himself in sales and sales management. He met another IBM employee, Nanette, on a blind date. They then established their own corporate family of 7 children. John and Nanette currently manage their own business, The Carney Group", which specializes in placing mature workers into the work force. In 1997 Mayor Ed Rendall recognized the Carney group as a "champion of mature workers".
John is active on his parish council, and also with the St. Rose CYO. He has coached basketball for years and also served for over 11 years as the Delaware Valley Regional Director of Basketball for the Keystone State Games.
John attends every alumni event he can, even traveling from North Wales to Wilmington, Delaware to attend a gathering there. He has served on committees for two capital campaigns, hosted gatherings for prospective King’s students, presented a career program for the placement office, signed up for the career mentoring program, provided a student internship, served on a focus group to develop an integrated marketing plan for admissions and sent two (so far) of his children to King’s.
